My Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Peace and blessings!
I hope that you and your loved ones are enjoying the peace and joy of our Christmas season. As I consider the blessings of Christmas and of this past year, I’m very grateful for the opportunity to serve as pastor of these two wonderful worshipping communities of Immaculate Conception and St. James that make up our Stoughton Catholic Collaborative. I’m also blessed to serve alongside my brother priests deacons and the parish staff.
I promised you from the beginning that I would be open, honest, and transparent with you regarding the state and future of our parishes. From the beginning, I told you to disregard any community chatter packaged as news about our parishes. Most of you have done this, but still, some rumors continue to flourish. Please know that unless you see news in writing from me, especially regarding questions of facilities, finances, and staffing, what you’re hearing is not true.
To that end, and as we enter 2021, I wanted to provide you with a financial report for Immaculate Conception and St. James Parishes. The Fiscal Year normally runs from July 1 through June 30 of a given year, but I thought it important to get you these numbers sooner rather than later so that we can all begin our time together building upon the same data. There will be another financial report in the late spring in preparation for the fiscal year. Budgets are monitored on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis by our staff and by the members of the Parish Finance Council. The members of the Finance Council are currently Joseph Baeta, James Kenney, Michael McSweeney, Percio Damasceno, David Doherty, and Michael Hickey. Jen Sroka our Director of Finance and Operations and I are ex officio members of the council. I’ve also asked Erika Thornton our director of Communication and Outreach to sit on the Council. I am grateful for the work and support of the Council thus far. It is my hope that in the near future we can add two or three more members to the council. As is the case with all of its parishes, the Archdiocese of Boston monitors our financial transactions and accounts through a monthly reporting system and conducts a formal audit every three years.
As you look at the included reports it is clear that our parishes are facing difficult financial situations. We need to bear in mind that our current numbers are also representative of the height of the period of Covid shutdown and the effects that it has had on our parish families. I am very grateful for all of you who have continued to support the work and life of our parishes.
As you know our parishes are in the midst of capital campaigns. I know that some of you have been concerned that the funds from these campaigns go to their stated uses and not to cover the deficit in our parish finances. I want to assure you that that is the case, and to that end I’ll be sending out a letter in a few weeks detailing the current status of the campaigns. At Immaculate Conception the fruit of the capital campaign can be seen thus far in the new bathrooms and the related updating of the electrical system and the fire alarms in the lower church. At St. James the fruit of the capital campaign is less readily visible, but we can still feel it in the new boiler which is serving to heat the Church as we go into the winter months.
I would like to conclude where I began with the rumor mill that keeps us distracted. Coming into this collaborative I inherited the beginnings of a plan of moving towards merging two parishes into one. I personally don’t believe that’s the necessary course of action. I believe that we need to take an honest look at the realities of our parishes, but I also believe that both of these parishes are a blessing to this community and the surrounding communities. I believe that we have the people and resources within Stoughton to support these two parishes and the many activities such as religious education, and the food pantry. It will require each of us to bring to prayer what we want these worshipping communities to be and what role we will play in making that happen.
I again pledge to you my full transparency and honesty in keeping you up to date on the state of our parishes. Thank you for your past support and for all that you do for our parishes. Count on my prayers as well and know that I count on your prayers as well.
In Christ’s Peace,
Rev. Carlos D. Suarez
Meus queridos irmãos e irmãs em Cristo,
Paz e bem!
Rev. Carlos D. Suarez
