This weekend, as we celebrate the Baptism of the Lord and the official conclusion of the Christmas season, we turn our attention to the new year that God has been gracious enough to give us. The verse below reminds us that our work as followers of Christ keeps going on, even as we take time to celebrate his sharing our world and humanity with us.
The Work of Christmas Begins
When the carols have been stilled,
When the star-topped tree is taken down,
When family and friends are gone home,
When we are back to our schedules
The work of Christmas begins:
To welcome the refugee,
To heal a broken planet,
To feed the hungry,
To build bridges of trust, not walls of fear,
To share our gifts, To unify a divided nation,
To seek justice and peace for all people,
To bring Christ’s light to the world.
- a variation on Howard Thurman’s ‘When the Song of the Angels is Stilled’
Since many of us are limited in the places we can go and the people we would ordinarily spend time with, prayer is an action the whole parish can participate in.
We’re therefore beginning a series of novenas, an approach to prayer spread out over nine days, that we will offer as a parish together.
We will begin the month of January offering a novena for the intercession of St. Joseph, since 2021 has been declared the Year of St. Joseph, followed by February under the protection of St. Peregrine, patron of cancer victims, with March being offered through St. Jude, patron of all difficult causes. We are open to your suggestions for patron saints or causes for the remainder of the year.
If you would like to participate in the novenas, please sign up by clicking the link below, and you will be sent a prayer each day for nine days for the novena offered that month. Remember, you can ask each of these powerful saints for healing in whatever area or cause you choose!
