The federal government early this morning executed the first woman in nearly 70 years after the US Supreme Court overturned a district court's stay of Lisa Montgomery's execution. Montgomery exhibited extreme mental illness, according to reports. She was convicted of killing a pregnant woman in 2004 and cutting out her unborn child who survived. The Catholic Church opposes the death penalty and numerous bishops have spoken out since the Justice Department resumed federal executions following a 17-year moratorium.
