This week we begin the Liturgical Season of “Ordinady Time". Despite its name, it signifies something that is anything but “ordinary".
Ordinary Time is called “ordinary” because the weeks are numbered, not because it is any less exciting or important than the other liturgical seasons. It is during this time that we focus on the life, teachings, and miracles of Christ and it establishes the ordered life of the Church.
Ordinary Time is a season of growth, which is signified by the color green which we wear throughout. It symbolizes growth, meaning that even though things this time of year seem ordinary, we are not stagnant. It’s a reminder that this is our chance to grow in faith and come to know Jesus more.
During Ordinary Time, the Gospels we hear tend to focus on the life, teachings, and miracles of Jesus. This is the time during the liturgical year when we focus on getting to know the Person of Christ, especially as we see His words and actions described in detail.
This is also a time to examine how we are living and how well we know Christ. This is a great time for us to make new schedules and commitments to put God first in our lives. This may mean that we find a specific time to pray every day, commit to read and pray through the Gospels, or frequent the Sacraments.
Whatever you choose to do over these coming weeks, allow what seems to be “ordinary" practices in your spiritual life to help you grow into something truly “extraordinary".
