When I got up on the morning of Thursday, January 7, 2021, all I heard about were the riots and mobs in Washington, D.C. It made me both angry and upset that we should be experiencing such discord in which the Church is celebrating the birth of our Savior and the beginning of a new year. These events reminded me of Herod, who during a time that should have been joyful, ordered the taking of the lives
of the innocents. I sat down , somewhat heavy-hearted, to pray my Morning Prayer and what should I read but Psalm 81, a Solemn renewal of the Covenant. Allow me to take some liberty and give you the words that stood out to me in this Psalm:
“I am the Lord your God…But my people did not heed to my voice and would not obey, so I left them to the stubbornness of their hearts to follow their own designs….”
Is this where we are in our nation today?
Is this nation abandoning the Covenant of God?
Is this what he expects of his children?
The answer an obvious NO! In our Pledge of Allegiance don’t we say we are “One Nation Under God”?
Seems to me that our nation’s leaders have forgotten this pledge.
So what do we do as faithful Catholics?
The obvious answer is to pray for some form of reconciliation because our political system seems to be divided and broken…and our leaders don’t seem to realize it and are getting further away from that “One Nation Under God.” They need to learn what Scripture has to say about it. We could write a book on that subject, but not here today. Here are just a few examples that they
should learn from…
Hebrews 12:7-11:
“Endure your trials with discipline; God treat you as sons. If you are without discipline you are not sons but bastards.”
“At times, all discipline seems not to cause joy but pain, yet later it brings the peaceful fruit of righteousness….”
The New Testament has many references to “peace,” an important ingredient that is needed these days. Our leaders need to read the Beatitudes in Chapter 5 of Matthew. They might learn something. Our leaders need to be peacemakers, not spreading discord. They can learn from St. Paul, who wrote this to the Colossians while he was in jail (Col 4:15). “And let the peace of Christ control your hearts, the peace into which you are also called into one body. And be thankful.”
I could go on and on, but the bottom line is, our leaders need to learn from Christ and his disciples..and pay heed to what they have to say…then our nation would become truly ONE NATION UNDER GOD!
Pray for integrity and peace…God bless…Deacon
