For the next two weeks there will be a bin in the narthex where you can give old palms to be burned. Ashes from the palms will be used for the ashes on Ash Wednesday.
We would also like to encourage you to bring in any burnable religious items that need proper disposal (paper, cloth, leather, wood, oil). Please include Christmas cards that you no longer want if they have a religious image on them so these images will not be thrown in the trash.
Examples of items that should be burned or buried:
- Worn out Bibles
- Frayed or torn prayer cards
- Old scapulars
- Any item that has been blessed but is no longer usable
- Unrepairable Rosaries or chaplets
- Broken statues, crosses, or crucifixes
We will burn these items respectfully in a separate burning from the palms.
At this time we do not have a place to bury items that are not able to be burned. Please do not bring in items that are plastic, plaster, stone, metal, or glass. If you have nonflammable items that you need to dispose of soon, e-mail me (talley@jp2denton.org) and I will see if the parish can store your items until they can be buried. The parish does not have a lot of storage space for such things though, so if it is not an immediate need, please continue to store these items respectfully in your home until you can properly dispose of them.
Sincerely,
Trey
PS: If you have 3rd class relics you do not want (for example: from religious order solicitation mailings) you can donate these to the parish and they will be given away via the basket currently in the narthex. Do not place them in the bin of items to be burned. Typically a 3rd class relic that is sent in the mail will be a small circle of cloth the size of a hole punch, and the item this cloth is attached to will clearly state that it is a relic. If you are unsure, feel free to ask.
