Dear Parishioners & Friends of Saint Philip the Apostle:
It has been in the news that an employee of the Cathedral of the Incarnation, my former parish, made numerous unauthorized financial transactions for personal use over a period of six years. The amount taken for personal use was $117,000. This was discovered in the Audit & Review of Internal Controls being conducted in all the parishes of the Diocese.
The use of parish funds by an employee happened under my watch as Pastor of the Cathedral. Care of the temporal and fiscal goods of a parish is one of the major responsibilities of a pastor. Although I am consoled that Diocesan officials and Fr. Eric Fowlkes, the pastor of the Cathedral, have made clear that I am not in any way suspected of being involved, I am terribly shocked and embarrassed that this happened during my tenure as pastor.
The good news for Saint Philip is that same Audit & Review of Internal Controls which discovered the improprieties at the Cathedral, was conducted and completed at Saint Philip over the summer. We received the final report in August. The Diocese found that not only were the parish financial controls at Saint Philip well designed, but it was also suggested that Saint Philip serve as an example to other parishes of how financial controls should be designed and implemented. The accolades we received for the quality of our financial stewardship is due in great part to the devoted work that our Finance Team does in the office every day. All who are involved in our parish finances see their responsibility for the financial affairs of our parish as a sacred duty.
The St. Philip Finance Council is outstanding, and the oversight by the Council of our parish financial processes and practices are watched closer than an eagle eying its prey. You should have the comfort of knowing that stewardship of the gifts you give to the parish is superb, and I’d say second to no other parish in the Diocese.
Finally, as you should be able to imagine, the staff at the Cathedral is stunned and broken-hearted by the behavior of one of their colleagues. Please pray for God’s grace for their healing. And, also, pray for the former employee and the employee’s family. Although disbelief and then anger are the first reactions, Christian charity, prayer, and forgiveness must be extended as the legal and personal consequences unfold.
