Something different at the beginning of Mass
The Collect and the Trinity
Brothers and sisters, you might note that as of Ash Wednesday the word “one” has been removed from the Church’s formal opening prayer at Mass. The Collect is the prayer the celebrant recites after the Gloria is finished, or in Lent, after the Penitential Rite. Previously the opening prayer to Mass typically would have ended with a phrase such as “… Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, ONE God forever and ever.” I suspect that deleting the word “one” may sound a little strange to our ears until we grow accustomed to it.
The reason for the change follows a recent directive from the Vatican addressed to all English-speaking churches. That word “one” is not found in the translations of the original Latin into other modern languages. For this reason it was deemed important to bring our celebration into conformity with the rest of the world’s translations.
May God bless you as you enter into the Season of Lent.
