How will Ash Wednesday 2021 look a little different?
This year, you will notice two distinct differences for the distribution of ashes. First, we will say the following words only once to everyone: “Repent, and believe in the Gospel,” or “Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return.” Second, we will not place the ashes on the forehead, but rather we will “take the ashes and sprinkle them on the head of each one without saying anything.”
These adjustments are being taken out of an abundance of caution due to the virus and out of obedience to the request of our superiors. While the application of ashes will be different for us, it is interesting to note that the sprinkling of ashes is the normal custom for Europe and most of the world. It is an opportunity to see how the rest of the world does it! Lastly, it is worth noting that the reception of ashes on Ash Wednesday while laudable, it is not obligatory. We look forward to fasting, doing penance, celebrating Mass, and kicking off Lent with all of you this Ash Wednesday!
