CHILDREN
While we could not accommodate children and their families at the Cathedral this year, we do hope you will celebrate some of the rites found at paragraphs 277-303 in the ritual.
CANDIDATES/PERMISSIONS??
We know that RCIA can be complex. Starting with the right question can help us determine what permissions might be needed before the celebration at the Easter Vigil.
The first question should always be: “What is the ecclesial connection of the person?” The answer for those who have never been baptized is “none.” These unbaptized people follow Part I in the Rite – a path leading to full initiation (Baptism/Confirmation/Eucharist) at the Easter Vigil. The Rite of Election and the Scrutinies are mandatory as is initiation at the Easter Vigil. Delegation/dispensation/permission from the Bishop is needed to celebrate the Rite of Election in the parish, to dispense from 1 or 2 of the 3 scrutinies or to celebrate initiation outside the Easter Vigil.
If the answer to the ecclesial connection question is that the person has been baptized, the next question is “in what tradition were they baptized?” If the person was validly baptized in a Protestant tradition, paragraphs 473-499 are applicable. The priest does not need further permission to “receive them into the full communion of the Catholic Church” through Confirmation and Eucharist. No further permission is needed to Confirm such candidates.
If the answer to the ecclesial question is that the person was baptized in the Catholic Church, then the priest needs permission to Confirm. The Bishop is the ordinary minister of the Confirmation of a Catholic.
