Burning of Palms. Traditionally, the ashes for Ash Wednesday are from the unused palms of the previous year. Because of the bad weather last Sunday, Father Kunkel, Deacon Phil, and Jack Smith burned them on Monday morning.

RCIA Lenten Scrutinies During Lent our Catechumens and Candidates: Brad, Catie, and Sean, are beginning the period of formal entry in to the Church. The parish becomes better acquainted with the candidates through a series of rituals called scrutinies that take place at the Sunday Masses during Lent.
Archbishop Lori’s Welcome to Catechumens and Candidates Message - Archbishop Lori prepared a welcome video to catechumens and candidates preparing for the Rite of Election and the Call to Continuing Conversion. Even though, in this time of pandemic, the Archbishop and his Auxiliaries are unable to share this message in person, Archbishop Lori would like to present warm words of prayer, encouragement, and affirmation for the remainder of their journey.
Outreach
The Food Pantry - Saturday February 21, Snow Date February 27
The pantry is open from 10 am until 11:30 a.m. We are always in need of volunteers for the Food Pantry. Please contact Sue Pardo (parfrm1@verizon.net) if you are interested. It only requires a few hours several Saturdays a year. Volunteers must be Virtus trained. For training information contact Barbara Sadler, ext 22.
Our Daily Bread
Based on Our Daily Bread’s new schedule, St. Mary’s will continue to deliver casseroles once-a-month. We plan to make the pans available on the weekend of March 6th and 7th . The frozen casseroles will need to be placed in the Parish freezer by Sunday March 14th . PLEASE WATCH FOR FURTHER DATES. If you have any questions, contact Bob at crhoopert@zoominternet.net
Respect Life
A separate Flocknote is coming out today with opportunities to make your voice heard on several issues of interest to Maryland Right to Life and the Maryland Catholic Conference.
February – 4th month. The “Little One” posters displayed in the hallway of the Parish Center are of beautiful pre-born children at the various stages of development inside their mothers’ wombs.
40 Days for Life February 17 - March 28 Participants pray at the Belair Beltway Plaza at 7600 Belair Road, 7am-7pm. Whole Woman’s Health, the abortion center in the back corner of the plaza boasts “Abortion pill (at home).” Join in prayer, in person or at home, to close this and all abortion centers.
Let’s Pray: Each week, we’ll pray for a group of elected officials without including titles, states or party affiliation so we remember they are our brothers and sisters, children of God, sinners like us. This week, add these names to your prayers: Tammy Baldwin, Chuck Schumer, Kirsten Gillibrand, Tom Cotton, John Boozman, Tina Smith, Amy Klobuchar, Ted Cruz, John, Cornyn, Mitch McConnell, Rand Paul, Rob Portman, Sherrod Brown, Kyrsten Sinema and Mark Kelly. Add also your local and state representatives. Pray they will submit to God’s holy will.
Celebrating Black History Month
This week the Archdiocese has provided an extensive list of resources to help us all learn more about racism and its effects on both Black Catholics and the entire Catholic Church in America. Please see attachment.
Weddings and Funerals
Masses for weddings and funerals are permitted outside, or inside with limited attendance. Please check with the parish office for further guidance.
Canceled Events and Activities
The parish buildings are still closed to the public except for religious services and education. All public events and most parish activities are canceled or postponed.
Sacraments
- Contact the Parish Office to arrange for Baptisms and the Sacrament of the Sick (Anointing).
- The Sacrament of the Sick for in-patients is available through the hospital chaplains.
Volunteering for the Parish
Volunteers are the backbone of the parish and we welcome new volunteers with open arms. However, in the world today we must do everything we can to protect all people of all ages, the church and also yourself.
If you are ready and willing to give of your time and talent to be a part of one or more of our many ministries, please contact Barbara Sadler, Extension 22 or bsadler@stmaryspylesville.org for the information and guidance of the required Virtus training. The training will provide insight for the protection of all age groups and the responsibilities. DON’T WORRY!! It is an easy procedure.
The 2021 Our Prayer Book, usually displayed near the altar, is not readily accessible for many parishioners to enter their own prayer intentions. St. Mary's Care Ministry is adding names and dates as you would like them to appear. Please send names and dates to peane13@verizon.net.
