The Sign of Jonah
““This generation is an evil generation; it seeks a sign, but no sign will be given it, except the sign of Jonah. Just as Jonah became a sign to the Ninevites, so will the Son of Man be to this generation.” (Lk 11:29-30)
In today’s gospel, Jesus responds to continued calls from the crowds for signs from him. The scribes, Pharisees and some crowd members refuse to accept the healings and exorcisms that Jesus has performed as authentication of who He is and of his message of the Good News. Jesus calls them an “evil generation” and tells them that He will give no signs except the “sign of Jonah”. The “sign of Jonah” is the preaching of the need for repentance by a prophet who comes from afar. Those in the crowds who are seeking further wonders have not truly recognized who Jesus is or understood his message.
In the story of Jonah, God asks Jonah to preach a message of repentance to the people of Nineveh. Instead of doing what God asks, Jonah runs away heading as far away from Nineveh as possible. After saving him from the belly of a whale, God calls Jonah again giving him a second chance. This time Jonah responds and goes to Nineveh preaching a message of repentance. The Ninevites respond positively and repent and change their ways thus saving themselves from God’s wrath.
Jesus’ message to the crowds is the same as Jonah, “repent”. If the Ninevites had the wisdom to recognize the authority of the prophet Jonah, then surely Jesus’ generation should be able to do the same since Jesus is even greater than Jonah. And, if foreigners like the Queen of Sheba and the Ninevites can see the truth, then the Israelites should be able to also.
We too have heard his message of repentance “Repent and believe in the gospel.” (Mk 1:15) Do we truly recognize and acknowledge that Jesus is our Lord and Savior? Are we willing to repent and change our ways to follow Him?
