Fr. Godfrey's Homily
Lent 02B 2021
St. Benedict Cathedral
A little alpine quiet time with Jesus away from the ever-hungry sheep was nothing extraordinary for the three apostles. But that day, along with the transfiguration light emanating from Jesus, there was also the meeting of the three who had spoken directly with God. In the midst of something ordinary, the three apostles glimpse the answer to thousands of questions and the fulfillment of thousands of years in a single, brilliant moment. In the radiant Christ, it could all make sense for them. But Peter would forget enough to betray Jesus. And James’ hazy memory absented him from the Cross. We see the radiant light of God’s glory in Jesus, but it’s easy to forget the astounding truth of Him as the answer to all our questions, hopes, and desires.
Brothers and sisters, in the midst of this Lent, as ordinary as it may be, let’s remember to see something far more amazing than the transfiguration. Let’s stay close to the brilliance of bread and wine becoming Christ’s Body and Blood. Let’s stay close to His Cross and ours, knowing that He is and always will be the light that shines upon us!
