Sunday Gospel Reflection by Bishop Parkes: Have you ever been so angry at a situation that you explode in the presence of others? Most of us have, and it can be a frightening sight. Most parents know what I’m talking about. On the surface, it appears that is what is happening in this weekend’s Gospel from St. John. Most of us have heard the story of Jesus angry in the temple with the money changers.
We are a joyful community of disciples proclaiming the Good News and inviting all people to encounter the love and mercy of Jesus Christ.

Holy Investments
“Since the Passover of the Jews was near, Jesus went up to Jerusalem. He found in the temple area those who sold oxen, sheep, and doves, as well as the money changers seated there. He made a whip out of cords and drove them all out of the temple area, with the sheep and oxen, and spilled the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables, and to those who sold doves he said, “Take these out of here, and stop making my Father’s house a marketplace.” His disciples recalled the words of Scripture, Zeal for your house will consume me. At this the Jews answered and said to him, “What sign can you show us for doing this?” Jesus answered and said to them, “Destroy this temple and in three days I will raise it up.” The Jews said, “This temple has been under construction for forty-six years, and you will raise it up in three days?” But he was speaking about the temple of his body. Therefore, when he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this, and they came to believe the Scripture and the word Jesus had spoken. While he was in Jerusalem for the feast of Passover, many began to believe in his name when they saw the signs he was doing. But Jesus would not trust himself to them because he knew them all,

Have you ever been so angry at a situation that you explode in the presence of others? Most of us have, and it can be a frightening sight. Most parents know what I’m talking about. On the surface, it appears that is what is happening in this weekend’s Gospel from St. John. Most of us have heard the story of Jesus angry in the temple with the money changers. He is so upset that He drove everyone out while overturning tables and creating what we’d call a public “scene.”
This passage can be studied in many ways. On the surface, Jesus is condemning those who are using holy ground to make a profit. In today’s world, it takes the generosity of many to keep the Church going. When churches and religious leaders focus their attention on the financial operation and income versus the spiritual needs of the Church, this can be of a detriment to the worshiping community. This is one aspect of the passage.
Another angle is that Jesus is confirming His authority to the Jews and those in the temple. Those running the market question Him for causing such a disturbance. He answered them by stating that what has taken 46 years to build, He could raise up in 3 days. Our Lord was teaching the point that, while the building is built with stone and mortar, the spiritual temple, who is Jesus, will never be destroyed. Even though the temple of His body will die on the cross, He will be raised up in just 3 days. He is reminding us that in a very overt fashion, that we should build up the kingdom in prayer, mercy, hope, and love, and not solely by money or material things.
In our own lives, do we worship money and material things, or do we put our faith in God? Do we spend our time worrying about our investments in the stock market, or do we invest our time in proclaiming Jesus as Lord and treating others with the same love and respect we would give to Jesus?

"Cuando se acercaba la Pascua de los judíos, Jesús llegó a Jerusalén y encontró en el templo a los vendedores de bueyes, ovejas y palomas, y a los cambistas con sus mesas. Entonces hizo un látigo de cordeles y los echó del templo, con todo y sus ovejas y bueyes; a los cambistas les volcó las mesas y les tiró al suelo las monedas; y a los que vendían palomas les dijo: “Quiten todo de aquí y no conviertan en un mercado la casa de mi Padre”. En ese momento, sus discípulos se acordaron de lo que estaba escrito: El celo de tu casa me devora. Después intervinieron los judíos para preguntarle: “¿Qué señal nos das de que tienes autoridad para actuar así?” Jesús les respondió: “Destruyan este templo y en tres días lo reconstruiré”. Replicaron los judíos: “Cuarenta y seis años se ha llevado la construcción del templo, ¿y tú lo vas a levantar en tres días?” Pero él hablaba del templo de su cuerpo. Por eso, cuando resucitó Jesús de entre los muertos, se acordaron sus discípulos de que había dicho aquello y creyeron en la Escritura y en las palabras que Jesús había dicho. Mientras estuvo en Jerusalén para las fiestas de Pascua, muchos creyeron en él, al ver los prodigios que hacía. Pero Jesús no se fiaba de ellos, porque los conocía a todos y no necesitaba que nadie le descubriera lo que es el hombre, porque él sabía lo que hay en el hombre.” - Juan 2, 13-25
¿Alguna vez te has enfadado tanto por una situación que has perdido los estribos en presencia de los demás? La mayoría de nosotros lo hemos hecho y puede ser un espectáculo aterrador. La mayoría de los padres saben de qué hablo. A primera vista parece que eso es lo que ocurre en el Evangelio de san Juan de este fin de semana. La mayoría de nosotros hemos oído la historia de Jesús enfadado en el templo con los cambistas. Está tan enfadado que echó a todos mientras volcaba las mesas y creaba lo que conocemos como un “disturbio público”.
Este pasaje se puede estudiar de muchas maneras. Al parecer, Jesús condena a los que utilizan un espacio sagrado para obtener un beneficio. En el mundo actual se necesita de la generosidad de muchos para mantener la labor de la Iglesia. Cuando las iglesias y los líderes religiosos centran su atención en el aspecto financiero y en sus ingresos en lugar de en las necesidades espirituales de la Iglesia puede ir en detrimento de la comunidad de fe. Éste es un aspecto del pasaje.
Otro ángulo es que Jesús les confirma a los judíos y a los del templo la autoridad que él tiene. Los que dirigen el mercado lo cuestionan por haber causado tal disturbio, pero Jesús les dice que lo que ha tardado 46 años en construirse, él podría levantarlo en 3 días. El punto de nuestro Señor era que, mientras que el edificio se construye con piedra y mortero, el templo espiritual, que es Jesús, nunca será destruido. Aunque el templo de su cuerpo morirá en la cruz, él resucitará en 3 días. Jesús nos pone claramente de manifiesto que debemos construir el Reino con la oración, la misericordia, la esperanza y el amor, y no sólo por dinero o cosas materiales.
Preguntémonos: ¿adoramos el dinero y las cosas materiales, o ponemos nuestra fe en Dios? ¿Pasamos nuestro tiempo preocupándonos por nuestras inversiones en la bolsa o invertimos nuestro tiempo en proclamar a Jesús como Señor, y en tratar a los demás con el mismo amor y respeto que le daríamos a Jesús?
