One of the striking aspects of our life as Catholics is the way we understand time. Time, for us, is not cyclic and repeated. No, we believe that time moves inexorably toward the fulfillment of the future God intends for humanity and all creation in his Son Jesus Christ. We mark the passage of time through the Church’s liturgical calendar, including great events like Christmas, Easter, and Pentecost central to God’s eternal plan of salvation, and seasons like Advent, Lent, and Ordinary Time that sanctify our daily lives and activities and reveal their truest meaning.
In addition, popes and bishops set aside times for the universal Church and local churches to focus more deeply on important truths of our faith. In 2015, for example, Pope Francis called an Extraordinary Year of Mercy. And late last year, he invited all of us to celebrate a Year of St. Joseph December 8, 2020- 2021. This Jubilee Year marks the 150th anniversary of the 1870 proclamation by Pope Pius IX of St. Joseph as the Patron of the Universal Church, a model of holiness, and a protector of God’s people, just as he watched over Mary and Jesus.
The Year of St. Joseph is a special joy for us in our historic church which bears his name. In the conclusion to his apostolic letter announcing the holy year, Pope Francis offers this beautiful prayer we can utter in any moment or any need. St. Joseph, ora pro nobis!
Hail, Guardian of the Redeemer,
Spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
To you God entrusted his only Son,
in you Mary placed her trust,
with you Christ became man.
Blessed Joseph, to us too,
show yourself a father
and guide us in the path of life.
Obtain for us grace, mercy, and courage,
and defend us from every evil. Amen.
