Healing for the weary soul
This past year has left many of us weary. It’s been difficult in so many ways for so many around the world dealing with the pandemic, violence, political tensions and more. During this period of trial, some have experienced for the first time what it means to struggle for just the basics. Many are frustrated and scared, unsure of what the future holds.
Individuals and families participating in the Unbound program have lived most of their lives with this reality, and the pandemic has been an added burden for them. But though they have been set back, they continue to look forward. It's a lesson we could all learn.
The second reading for Easter Sunday says, "Brothers and sisters: If then you were raised with Christ, seek what is above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. Think of what is above, not of what is on earth." (Col 3.1-2)
We celebrate the resurrection of our Lord in the spring, which is a time of rebirth and renewal. Plants put on new leaves and a new breath of life seems to permeate the air. It is as if the whole of creation is crying out, "He is risen!"
This is a time to give thanks for what Christ did for us on the cross. He sacrificed so that no matter what ugliness may appear on earth, through his blood it is washed away. The beauty of spring is a pale reminder of what our Father in heaven has prepared for us. If more of us focus on God's blessing to humanity and think about what is waiting for us above, perhaps we can find ways to make a greater difference in the lives of others and bring some measure of healing while still on earth.
