Jesus is Risen
The frustration of Jesus being unjustly accused and sentenced to death, his anguish over what was about to happen to him, his betrayal, the disappointment that his closest friends couldn’t stay awake to help him, the pain and agony of crucifixion …was over. His apostles hid in fear because now THEY were in danger. They felt that all was lost. The joy and triumph of the Kingdom of God, which had seemed so glorious just a week ago, was gone.
The Stations of the Cross, the Good Friday service at church both recreate for us the loss and sadness of Jesus’ crucifixion. To see the tabernacle empty and the alter stripped we feel the emptiness of what it is to be without God, without Jesus, without the Holy Spirit.
The good news is that’s not the end of the story. On Easter we feel absolute exhilaration because Jesus rose from dead! He had died but then he wasn’t dead anymore. He overcame death. This had never happened before. How could this be? It seems impossible but we know it is true because there is evidence. Witnesses who were there wrote down what they saw.
The cross, on which the Romans crucified people publicly, as a symbol of threat, pain and death was transformed by Jesus to become an invitation to joy and eternal life.
