Each week I search the best of the internet for sacred choral music that aligns with the Weekend's scripture readings and post several selections on our website at Choral Music Worth Hearing.
In the 4th verse of Adoro Te Devote it jumped out at me: I am not like Thomas, wounds I cannot see, but I plainly call thee Lord and God as he.
Given Thomas' prominence in our Gospel this weekend it made sense that I should go looking for music to reflect his story. Initially I looked for music that quotes the Gospel of John directly: "Because you have seen me, Thomas, you have believed."
Thus, on our main page, I posted several versions of
Quia Vidisti, Thoma and one with a slightly different translation, Plagas, sicut Thomas.
Imagine my surprise when I accidentally discovered that this beautiful adoration hymn also brings Thomas' struggle to bear -- but through our own eyes of belief, thousands of years tested.
I am not like Thomas, wounds I cannot see, but I plainly call thee Lord and God as he.
I did not anticipate finding Thomas' story embedded in the text of Adoro Te Devote, text penned by the great St Thomas Aquinas, but there it was.
I simply marvel at moments like that. Here it is for you to enjoy.
