Bread of Life
“I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me will never hunger, and whoever believes in me will never thirst.” (Jn 6:35)
Our Gospel reading from John chapter 6 is a continuation of the “Bread of Life Discourse”. After the feeding of the 5000, the crowd continues to follow Jesus seeking to be fed again. The crowds don’t understand that Jesus has more to offer than just physical food. Jesus tells them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me will never hunger, and whoever believes in me will never thirst.” (Jn 6:35) In this passage, Jesus reveals who he is. He begins to teach about the Eucharist. He lays out the fact that our souls will never be hungry or thirsty if we come to him. Only in Him will we truly be satisfied. Only in Him will we find true happiness and joy. Only in Him will we find the way to the Father.
Let us pray, Heavenly Father, thank you for sending your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, to be the Bread of Life for the world. Forgive us for elevating earthly appetites above devotion to you. Feed us with the knowledge of Christ so that we recognize our sin and gladly repent in his name. Amen
