The Mystery of Attraction
I am the living bread that came down from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give is my Flesh for the life of the world. (Jn 6:51)
In today's Gospel passage, a portion of the Bread of Life discourse, reminds us of two natural attractions that we have been given: a hunger for food and a hunger for God. We know that God has created us to hunger physically, and then seek to satisfy that hunger through attraction to food and eating it. So, also, has God put a spiritual hunger in our hearts and souls, with the satisfaction of that hunger found in God alone. Wonderfully, Jesus is able, through his teachings on being the Bread of Life, to combine both our being drawn to food and our being drawn to God. So during this season of Easter as well as in every day of our lives, let us open our heart and allow the power of the Holy Spirit to lead us to light Christ. We might consider skipping a meal today to help us experience this. May any hunger we have remind us of our hunger for God, most perfectly satisfied as we receive, know and experience Jesus, the Bread of Life.
Dear Lord Jesus, I do long for You. I long to be satisfied. Help me to turn to You at all times and in all things. Help me to always remember that You are what I need and You alone satisfy my restless heart. Amen.
