“You are already pruned because of the word that I spoke to you.” (John 15:3)
Pruning, of course, is an agricultural metaphor Jesus uses of his disciples in today’s gospel. It is not meant literally but figuratively. Yet the effect is supposed to be the same. Pruning is good for the soul. It allows the deeper nourishment to come to the surface and to shape our faith more effectively.
