Care for Creation and Environmental Stewardship
May 21, 2021 is Endangered Species Day observed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to recognize national conservation efforts to protect our nation's endangered species and their habitats.
The International Union for Conservation of Nature lists more than 16,000 endangered species (animals and plants) threatened with extinction. A species is classified as endangered when its population has declined between 50 and 70 percent and as when its population is restricted to fewer than 250 mature individuals.
Habitat destruction is the main threat to 85 percent of all threatened and endangered species.
You can support birds and wildlife by:
-planting more native trees, shrubs, wildflowers and grasses;
-keep cats indoors;
-pay attention to wildlife awareness signs along roadways and drive the speed limit;
-refuse to buy items made with or from wild animal parts (especially seals, shark fins, ivory, and rhino horn);
-avoid pesticide and herbicide use or use only those specified as organic;
-support the restoration of wetlands and wildlife habitats;
-clean up beaches and waterways;
-use your community's parks and trail system; and
-support local nature centers, wildlife sanctuaries, and conservation organizations.
