Each week I search the best of the internet for sacred choral music that aligns with the Weekend's scripture readings and post several selections on our website at Choral Music Worth Hearing.
The following recording of Holy God, We Praise Thy Name is cool for several reasons.
First, it was recorded at the Vatican with scrolling pictures of the vast interior. Secondly, it features a unique descant sung by the young women of the choir on the final - and 4th - verse.
These two things make me ponder the Trinity in a new way.
First the architecture of the Vatican is both a complete expression of our faith as well as many intimate iterations played out in side chapels and murals and stained glass. Just the Dove of the Holy Spirit window in the back wall of the Basilica is a marvel unto itself. Put it alongside every other aspect of the building and one approaches awesomeness.
I also imagine hearing this recording as another way of understanding the Trinity - this marvelous singular divine whole, made up of individual and unique elements such as the choir, the organ, the acoustic, the words, the melody, the harmony, the descant.
The music is both/and the sum of its parts and the parts!
