Dear Parishioners,
Last Sunday, we celebrated the great Solemnity of Pentecost and hosted the last Confirmation for the Easter Season. The total celebrations of the Sacrament of Confirmation held at the Cathedral Basilica this year were fifteen. There is an immense amount of planning, from scheduling the parishes to contacting lectors, that takes place before the Easter Season. My deep gratitude to our staff and our volunteers who arrived an hour before each confirmation, placed pew reservation markers and welcomed visitors with a smile.
This Monday, we gather to celebrate Memorial Day at our 8 am Mass; we honor those who have given their lives in the service of our country. War should always remind us of the call the Lord gives to us in the Gospel, to be people who work for peace, to be people who work for the right ordering of society, for the ordering of society according to the plan of God, not according to the plan of man.
The only way that there will ever be peace within our world is if all peoples are converted to the message of Jesus Christ - if our hearts and minds are transformed to live our lives according to God’s plan and not our plans. We must constantly propose the truth of the Gospel to the world, inviting them to come to know Jesus Christ. When we honor the dead and those who have gone before us, we, too, remember the tremendous sacrifices they have made. We remember how many of them have been scarred for life, whether physically or emotionally.
On Saturday, May 29th the Cathedral Basilica hosted the Ordination to the Priesthood of six men for the Archdiocese of St. Louis. Please join me in wishing them all the best as they begin the life of priestly ministry. I would ask you as well to pray for them and for all priests.
O Jesus,
I pray for Your faithful and fervent priests;
for Your unfaithful and tepid priests;
for Your priests labouring at home
or abroad in distant mission fields;
for Your tempted priests;
for Your lonely and desolate priest;
for Your young priests;
for Your dying priests;
for the souls of Your priests in purgatory.
But above all I recommend to You the priests dearest to me;
the priest who baptized me;
the priests who absolved me from my sins;
the priests at whose Masses I assisted
and who gave me Your Body and Blood in Holy communion;
the priests who taught and instructed me;
all the priests to whom I am indebted in any other way.
O Jesus, keep them all close to Your heart,
and bless them abundantly in time and in eternity. Amen
Monsignor Henry Breier
This Weekend's Pulpit Announcements
Congratulations to the six men from the St. Louis Archdiocese who were ordained to the priesthood this weekend. Please pray for these men and all the newly ordained as they begin their journey as God’s own shepherds.
Our thanks to all parishioners and guests who have made a pledge or a contribution to the 2021 Annual Catholic Appeal. If you have not already done so, please remember that it is never too late and that no gift is too small. Large white pledge envelopes may be found on the tables at the entrances of the Cathedral if you wish to make a pledge or contribution today.
This Monday, May 31, the Cathedral Basilica will gather for Mass at 8:00 am in recognition of Memorial Day. This will be the only Mass celebrated here at the Cathedral on Memorial Day.
On Sunday, June 6, Archbishop Mitchell Rozanski will lead the annual Corpus Christi Procession from the front steps of the Cathedral immediately following the 12 noon Mass. All are invited to join this prayerful procession of the Holy Eucharist.
UPDATE
COVID-19 Guidelines
To Archdiocesan Parishes:
The mask mandate now only applies to all parish faithful who have not received a vaccination against the COVID-19 virus. Following the CDC guidance issued yesterday, capacity restrictions and social-distancing measures at archdiocesan parishes will be determined by the parish pastor based on the size and construct of the parish and what he deems is needed to provide for the safest possible environment. These changes in the guidance are effective immediately.
Archbishop Mitchell Rozanski leaves in place the dispensation for Sunday Mass at this time but will be re-evaluating the need for the dispensation in the coming weeks.
What does this mean for the Cathedral Basilica?
- Masks are required to be worn only by those who have not received a vaccination against the COVID-19 virus. Those who are fully vaccinated need not wear a mask but may do so if they wish.
- In preparation for the Ordination to the Priesthood Mass this Saturday, all pews will be opened up to accommodate the larger than normal attendance. At the conclusion of the Ordination, Cathedral Staff will once again block off every other pew, but only in a selected section of pews, to accommodate those who wish to continue practicing a certain level of Social Distancing. This may be amended as we move forward. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the rectory.
- Communion on the tongue will continue to be distributed at the Communion Rail for the foreseeable future.
