In the Flocknote about our meeting on June 1 that was sent yesterday, I neglected to include the discussion we had about the Tulsa Massacre. Lou graciously provided the following summary. Thank you, Lou!
Many meeting attendees had watched the presentation about the Tulsa, Oklahoma massacre which took place on May 31, 1921 – Jun 1, 1921. Mobs of white residents, many of them deputized and given weapons by city officials, attacked black residents and destroyed homes and businesses of the Greenwood District in Tulsa, including Black Wall Street. How is it that we had not heard of this massacre until relatively recently? On January 1, 1923, a massacre was carried out in the small, predominantly black town of Rosewood in central Florida, and acts of systematic violence against African Americans continued until January 7. Some of us knew nothing of this. Lord, help us.
I also made an error in our meeting date in the body of the previous note. The meeting was on June 1. It was correct in the Subject line. Somehow I had forgotten how to read a calendar. My apologies for the error and the omission.
