Message from our Pastor Father Carlos D. Suarez:
Sometimes when we read the Bible we can forget that in the midst of some of the books that are poetic expressions such as the Psalms or the Song of Songs we also have books that are historical filled with persons and events that took place at a determined time in history and not just in the mind of the book’s author. As they speak to God’s chosen people at a given moment of salvation history the power of their words continues to challenge and inspire our life of faith today.
If the prophets make something clear for us it’s that being a prophet isn’t an easy task. They’re not always well received and quite often they suffer persecution and death simply for being faithful in proclaiming the message that God entrusted to them. That prophets often faced such hostile welcomes shouldn’t surprise us. They rarely came congratulating everyone on the good job they were doing. On the contrary, prophets often arose when the people of God had gone far astray from the path God had laid out for them. The time of the prophets ended with the life of St. John the Baptist. God needed to send no further prophets after St. John since instead of sending a messenger God decided to send us His only Son. After Jesus, there is no longer a need for major messengers since Jesus continues to live and speak in our midst through His presence in the sacramental life and the teaching of His Church.
However, each of us by our baptism and incorporation into the body of Christ continues to share in a prophetic mission of reaching others in the darkness and messiness of their lives and inviting them to discover God’s love for them. God can speak to them directly, but often He chooses to send one of us instead. It’s good from time to time to pause and look back over our journey in order to see how God’s grace has brought us this far. The more we’re mindful of God’s what God has done for us the more we can praise Him and share the fruits of His goodness with others. To share these spiritual fruits with others is an act of gratitude to God who has done so much good for us and it is part of our mission in extending the reach of God’s kingdom. As the prophets that God is calling in this time, you may not be climbing a mountaintop to condemn false priests and empty sacrifices but your prophetic word may be exactly what a given person needs to hear to turn them from hopelessness to life. Do not be afraid to share the good news with others. God is counting on you. -- Fr. Carlos
- Pe. Carlos
