Sunday Obligation / Obligación Domincal
Effective June 12-13, attendance at Sunday Mass is obligatory for Catholics in Indiana. Exceptions to the obligation are listed below. Below we have also answered some questions which are sure to arise in the coming weeks as many return to Mass for the first time in several months.
- Those who are seriously ill, exhibit flu-like symptoms and/or may have a contagious disease (including quarantine due to exposure).
- Those who are unable to attend Mass through no fault of their own (e.g. transportation issue).
- Those who are homebound and/or incapacitated due to age, infirmity and/or medical restrictions.
- Those who have compromised health conditions and/or at high risk of contracting the virus.
- Those who are caretakers of person who are sick or of persons at high-risk of serious illness if they contract Covid virus.
What if I am sick or in quarantine?Stay home. You are not obliged to attend Mass.
Do I have to sign up for Mass?A sign-up is no longer required for Mass at St. Philip Neri. Just show up!
What is the Mass Schedule? Our Mass schedule is 6 PM Saturday (Spanish), 9:30 am Sunday (English), and 11:30 PM (Spanish).
Do I have to wear a Mask?Effective immediately, the Archdiocese has stated that "the use of a face covering is now
strongly encouraged at liturgical celebrations in the Archdiocese of Indianapolis until further notice." Note that it no longer uses the words "expected" or "required." This means that you must make your own decision on whether or not to wear a mask. Keep in mind that
"the filtration effectiveness of cloth masks is generally lower than that of medical masks and respirators." If you are going to wear a mask, choose one that is actually effective. Also, remember that
the CDC recently stated that those who are fully vaccinated need not wear a mask, even indoors.
Can I ask someone around me in church if they are vaccinated? It is the question on everyone's mind these days! However, the decision to be vaccinated or not is a personal one which should be considered carefully, and to ask another parishioner about their vaccination status is disrespectful. If someone chooses to volunteer that information, that is different.
Now is the time for us to renew our trust in one another. It seems to me that the understandable uncertainty and fear in these months of pandemic have broken down the trust that holds our community together. As we joyfully return to the duty of attending Sunday Mass, I hope we can all leave behind any selfish or suspicious tendencies that have crept into our hearts and recommit to charity and trust.
No estás obligado a asistir a misa.
