Twenty-ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time (A)
October 31 of this year is the 500th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation. That is the day in 1507 when Martin Luther nailed his ninety-five theses on the door of a church in Wittenberg, Germany. Today the question will be asked “is there any hope that the Catholic Church and the Protestant churches might be reunited? Can there be some form of confessional pluralism within a broader but fundamental unity?”
What are the major differences? For the Protestants there are four major obstacles: Marian dogmas, the Real Presence in the Eucharist, the sacrificial nature of the Mass and the primacy and infallibility of the Roman Pontiff. A further obstacle is that there are many thousands of different Christian denominations in the world today. Five hundred years after the Reformation, no one seems to know how to reconcile unity with freedom.
The task seems impossible but there are courageous people who keep trying. One interesting suggestion is to work on unity with the Orthodox churches. Out of that attempt emerge new language that will bridge differences not only between Catholicism and the Orthodox churches but also between Catholicism and Protestant churches.
