National Past President
Care for Our Common Home
Communiqué #8
TO: Provincial Past Presidents CC: National Executive
National Life Member Liaison
FROM: Margaret Ann Jacobs, National Past President and Chairperson of Laws
Greetings to my League sisters,
Thank you for your continued efforts and unfailing support of the League in these trying times. As noted in your annual reports, some of you serve in combined roles—past president and president— and of course, the League is excellent at recycling.
Past presidents have been anxious to support their presidents. Brava! Unfortunately, presidents do not always consult with you. Continue to make yourself available and offer encouragement as your provincial council comes back to life after the pandemic. What may not have worked in the past may work now. So, work to fortify the team effort.
Now is an ideal time to chronicle the recent historical events. Unfortunately, many regular League activities may have been interrupted. Still, members throughout the country have been extremely active, devoting more time to prayer, involving themselves in service projects for their communities and broadening their knowledge and support of social justice issues affecting the world. Please ask your diocesan counterparts to encourage parish councils to capture these events before they fade in memory.
Amendments to the Constitution & Bylaws (C&B) were circulated last December with the intent to tabulate and adopt the instructed vote at the national annual meeting of members in August 2021. The COVID-19 pandemic forced the delay of this vote until 2022. Councils had the option to delay discussion and voting on these changes until it was safe to meet in person and fully debate the amendments. Encourage past presidents to be available to make this presentation at council meetings and support an informed decision about the League in the future.
With the pending vote on the amendments, the national executive/board originally planned not to address changes to the National Manual of Policy and Procedure (P&P) last year. However, the delay in the vote on the amendments opened a window for proposed policy changes. Councils and members are encouraged to forward proposed revisions to the P&P using the form found on the website and submit them to national office by December 1, 2021. These will be reviewed by the national chairperson of laws and presented to the board for adoption at its winter meeting. So, P&P changes may be submitted and adopted before the vote on the C&B in August
2022. When voted upon, any amendments adopted will necessitate a future major review of the P&P.
As this term winds down and another one is fresh on the horizon, I thank you for your continued service. I encourage you to consider this next year as a hope-filled new beginning. There will always be a role for you as past president—mentor, leader, cheerleader and friend.
As devoted League members, you will always, “Speak out for those who cannot speak, for the rights of all the destitute. Speak out, judge righteously, defend the rights of the poor and needy.” (Proverbs 31. 8-9)
God bless,
Margaret Ann Jacobs
National Past President
