How does Confession work?
Penance and Reconciliation is a Sacrament – In this Sacrament of healing we are reconciled to God and the Church.
“Confession is meant to be a sincere moment of conversion, an occasion to demonstrate trust in God’s willingness to forgive His children and to help them back on the path of following Jesus” – Pope Francis
The Sacrament of Penance is God’s gift to us so that any sin committed after Baptism can be forgiven.
“Forgive me Father for I have sinned.”
Though the penitent is saying this in the presence of a priest (who we refer to as Father) this penitent's request for reconciliation is being made to God the Father who is present in this Sacrament. The priest is “In Persona Christi”
When we repent of our sins, God is so gracious that He not only forgives us, but He even forgets our sins. Leave your past where it belongs – at the Cross.
