As promised, Father Jairo has forwarded me his homily:
We call the people who share our same blood line family and those ties are so strong that nothing can break them. However during our lives we meet people who become so important to us that even if they do not share blood ties with us they become our family.
The bonds that Jesus built with his disciples were so strong that he no longer considered them strangers, he saw them as his family. The ties that Jesus was building with humanity became so strong that his own Father considers us his children.
Today's gospel can be a bit confusing; it can lead us to think that Jesus rejects his blood family. However, if we dig a little deeper, we see that the words of Jesus are nothing more than a declaration of love towards those of us who strive to follow his commandments, a declaration of love toward all the men and women who during history have tried to please God – all men and women who lived before and after Jesus.
Today we should feel happy because Jesus makes us part of his family and of his Salvation Project. Today is a great day for us Catholics and we must promise God that in our hearts there will be space for all men and women and that they will no longer be alone - we will treat our neighbors as our brothers, sisters and mothers.
