Dear Brothers and Sisters,
Each time Mass is offered in our parish there is a Mass intention. Often the intention is for a deceased relative or friend of a parishioner. Offering a Mass for the dead is an ancient Catholic tradition that helps souls on their way to heaven. St. Ambrose exhorted the faithful by preaching: “We have loved them during life; let us not abandon them in death, until we have conducted them by our prayers into the House of the Lord.” To have a Mass said for the repose of the soul of someone who has passed away, even a non-Catholic, is a comforting expression of faith and love.
Special additional intentions are offered to God as prayers of intercession and thanksgiving. In and through Christ’s perfect sacrifice made present to us in the Eucharist, we pray for the deceased, for those who are ill, for those who face various
difficulties or challenges. Often people request a Mass as a prayer of thanksgiving to God for their experience of God’s loving grace helping them through a particularly challenging event or circumstance of life.
