Weeds among the Wheat Explained
His disciples approached him and said, “Explain to us the parable of the weeds in the field.” (Mt 13:36)
In Saturday’s daily reading, Jesus gave us the parable of the Weeds among the Wheat. In today’s reading, his disciples ask him to explain the meaning of this parable. In his explanation, Jesus replies that He, the Son of Man, sows good seed in the field of the world. The devil sows weeds in the world to grow alongside the wheat. The good seeds are the children of the Kingdom and the weeds are the children of the Evil One. At the end of time, the harvest, the bad will be separated from the good and burned. The parable emphasizes God’s patience until the judgment time and the fearful end of the wicked.
It is God’s desire that no one be lost to the evil one. So, until the harvest time comes, there is still time to labor in the field and grow the good seed. How can we work, in collaboration with our Lord, to cultivate good seeds? What daily choices do we make that help to grow our relationship with the Lord and with those around us?
