Abortion is the “law of the land”, a woman’s “right to choose”, a political game piece, a moral tragedy, . . . so, what can one individual do? That’s what I always thought until 1991 when I became involved in the “Summer of Mercy”. It was during this time that the pro-life movement awakened and concerned people from all walks of life and belonging to different denominational churches and Catholic parishes came together in a committed and somewhat organized manner to end the plague of abortion in our city. In July 1991, there were three abortion clinics operating within our city limits, one of which offered late term abortions—as late as the baby’s due date. Within a few years, two of those clinics shut down. Currently, one clinic remains open. Due to the hard work of pro-lifers, laws have changed sufficiently to prevent the horrendous late term abortions in Kansas, but each life that is snuffed out is a child of God and worthy of our concern and protection.
Want to know what YOU can do about this? It’s as difficult or as easy as you want to make it! The absolutely easiest, and the best, thing to do is to make a commitment to offer daily prayers for the women who find themselves having to make a difficult decision, or as many times happens, are being coerced into making a fatal “choice.” You are also encouraged to join a group of us that have met in the church for 25 years on Monday nights at 8:15 to pray a “Rosary for Life.” On the other hand, one of the most difficult and uncomfortable things to do is to spend time at the gate of the abortion clinic. A handful of committed pro-life Christians are volunteering some of their time every week to spend at least an hour and a half on the sidewalk leading to the clinic, offering a helping hand to any woman who might be seeking assistance in order to let her baby live. My double “shift” is from 8:00 – 11:00 AM on Monday mornings. If anyone would like to join me for any amount of time to experience what this entails, please give me a call. No one is expected to do this without some training and a partner. Please keep in mind this poignant warning attributed to Edmund Burke (Irish statesman and philosopher): “The only thing necessary for the triumph of Evil is that Good Men Do Nothing.” Do not be accused of doing NOTHING! for more information on assistance you can give in this endeavor, please call Linda Arensdorf, 773-5524 or LuAnn Pascal 213-3074.
