Turning Together Toward the Lord
The ceremonies of Exposition and Benediction are two of my favorite liturgical celebrations! They are powerful, of course, because in the Eucharist Jesus reveals His Love and provokes a profound silence in our hearts. However, these celebrations also reveal our identity as a parish - a community turning together toward the Lord. During exposition and benediction, we all face the same direction to adore the Eucharistic face of Jesus.
Most Catholics during the last 2,000 years also experienced this turning together toward the Lord during the Mass. The practice of the priest and the people facing the same direction, also called Ad Orientem (toward the East), is an ancient tradition which continues today in every Church with Apostolic roots.
Since the 1970s, our most common experience of the Mass here in the US has been with the priest facing versus populum (toward the people). Our lack of familiarity with ad orientem worship may make us wonder whether it is just a relic of the past. It may even seem that the direction that the priest is facing is just a matter of preference. In his book The Spirit of the Liturgy, then-Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger had this to say:
"[A] common turning to the east during the Eucharistic Prayer remains essential. This is not a case of doing something accidental, but of what is essential. Looking at the priest has no importance. What matters is looking together at the Lord. It is not now a question of dialogue but of common worship, of setting off toward the One who is to come."
The Mass is a dialogue between God and His People. The priest is the mediator of this dialogue. He stands in the place of Christ to break open the Word of God and make an offering to the Father on the Church's behalf. When the priest is proclaiming the Gospel and preaching, it makes sense for him to face the people. After all, he is talking to them! Once the Eucharist Prayer begins, however, "it is not now a question of dialogue, but of common worship, of setting off toward the One who is to come." At the altar the priest is now speaking to God the Father. This is a time to turn together toward the Lord and offer the Holy Sacrifice.
Our ancestors in the faith teach us by the traditions they have handed down through the ages. In ad orientem worship, the remind us that we are a Pilgrim People, a community always in common movement toward the Lord. Next time you attend Exposition or Benediction, notice the power of turning together toward the Lord! If you are interested in experiencing this way of celebrating the Mass, it is currently available on Thursdays at the 6 PM Mass in Latin. Stay tuned for other opportunities to turn together toward the Lord at Mass, coming soon!
May we turn toward Him more and more each day! Come, Lord Jesus!
