WHAT IS RCIA?
The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops describes the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults as a process in which participants "undergo…conversion as they study the Gospel, profess faith in Jesus and the Catholic Church, and receive the sacraments…The RCIA process follows the ancient practice of the Church and was restored by the Second Vatican Council as the normal way adults prepare for baptism."
Likewise, the language used in the RCIA process is that of the early Church formation programs.
Catechumens are those non-baptized adults or older children (7 years or older) who are seeking full initiation into the Catholic Church through all of the Sacraments of Initiation – Baptism, Eucharist and Confirmation. During this process, which is marked by regular ritual acts, participants are introduced to the liturgy, the teachings, and the life of the Catholic Church.
Candidates are adults or older children (7 years or older) who were baptized in another Christian denomination but are seeking initiation into the Catholic Church through Eucharist and Confirmation. There are some persons who were actually baptized as Roman Catholics, but have little, if any, upbringing in the Catholic faith; these can also be considered as Candidates wishing to receive the Sacraments of Eucharist and Confirmation. Those who are to become Candidates, that is, those who are already baptized in another Christian denomination are NOT re-baptized; they are asked to furnish a copy of their baptismal certificate. If this certificate cannot be located, an affidavit from parents, godparents or others who witnessed the baptism will suffice.
Confirmandi are adults (high school or older) who are already baptized Roman Catholics, but who have not yet been confirmed (and perhaps not yet received First Holy Communion). Teens in high school years attend classes under the direction of Louie Latina, our Director of Youth Ministry. All other teens (out of high school) and adults attend classes with the Catechumens and Candidates.
Our Annual Diocesan Conference at the Orleans Hotel Conference Center is scheduled IN-PERSON this year on September 17th and 18th. The hotel staff and our Conference organizers will follow all required safety protocols for social distancing, sanitizing and wearing masks.
RISE! is the theme for this Conference. We recall familiar stories in scripture where Jesus tells the person healed to, ‘Rise!’ or ‘Take up your mat and walk.’ or ‘Come out!’ Each person is restored to their rightful place in society. Each is called to witness to Jesus as Son of God and Savior of the World! We, too, are called to witness to Jesus as a community of faith and as baptized members of the Body of Christ in the Catholic Church.
The following is a prayer from Pope Benedict XVI that he prayed when he visited ground zero in 2008.
O God of love, compassion, and healing, look on us, people of many different faiths and traditions, who gather today at this site, the scene of incredible violence and pain.
We ask you in your goodness to give eternal light and peace to all who died here— the heroic first-responders: our fire fighters, police officers, emergency service workers, and Port Authority personnel, along with all the innocent men and women who were victims of this tragedy simply because their work or service brought them here on September 11, 2001.
ask you, in your compassion to bring healing to those who, because of their presence here that day, suffer from injuries and illness. Heal, too, the pain of still-grieving families and all who lost loved ones in this tragedy. Give them strength to continue their lives with courage and hope.
We are mindful as well of those who suffered death, injury, and loss on the same day at the Pentagon and in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Our hearts are one with theirs as our prayer embraces their pain and suffering.
God of peace, bring your peace to our violent world: peace in the hearts of all men and women and peace among the nations of the earth. Turn to your way of love those whose hearts and minds are consumed with hatred.
God of understanding, overwhelmed by the magnitude of this tragedy, we seek your light and guidance as we confront such terrible events.
Grant that those whose lives were spared may live so that the lives lost here may not have been lost in vain. Comfort and console us, strengthen us in hope, and give us the wisdom and courage to work tirelessly for a world where true peace and love reign among nations and in the hearts of all.
MOMENT OF THE WEEK
Mary's Birthday Celebration! This past week, we celebrated the Feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary (September 8th). This date is exactly 9 months from the Feast of the Immaculate Conception (which is on December 8th) and celebrates Mary's conception in her mothers womb without the stain of original sin. The Knights of Columbus, along with some members of the choir, said a Rosary in front of our own Our Lady of the Pentecost to commemorate this wonderful feast day. Happy Birthday Mary!

GOSPEL REFLECTION QUESTIONS
Read the Readings from this Sunday, the 24th Sunday in Ordinary Time
Isaiah 50:5-9a; Psalm 116:1-2, 3-4, 5-6, 8-9; James 2:14-18; Mark 8:27-35
Use the following discussion/reflection questions in your families, with your spouse, your friends, or even as personal journal questions:
1. In your own words, what would the Lord’s help look like today? How can we better receive the Lord’s help?
2. In what ways do you share the Gospel message with those around you?
3. Do you tend to share the Good News with people you know or strangers? Who is it easier to share the Gospel with? Why?
4. What keeps you from sharing the Gospel? How can you overcome these obstacles or fears? How can we help each other live fearlessly for the Lord?
WEEKLY WORSHIP
There's nothing worth more, that will ever come close
No thing can compare, You're our living hope
Your Presence Lord
I've tasted and seen, of the sweetest of loves
Where my heart becomes free, and my shame is undone
In Your Presence Lord
Holy Spirit You are welcome here
Come flood this place and fill the atmosphere
Your Glory God is what our hearts long for
To be overcome by Your Presence Lord
Let us become more aware of Your Presence
Let us experience the Glory of Your Goodness
Let us become more aware of Your Presence
Let us experience the Glory of Your Goodness Lord

ANGEL TREE 2020
November 28th - December 13th
This year’s Angel Tree project will be a little different. As you are aware several things are different from prior years: We are practicing social distancing and many schools have not reopened. Many families are without jobs through no fault of their own. The agencies are at a disadvantage since they must use fewer volunteers to assist in their Christmas gift giving programs. We are limited in space for storage and the number of volunteers we can use at one time. Therefore, we are asking everyone to try something new this year…
After all the Masses on the weekend of November 21st & 22nd, volunteers will be handing out a special Angel tag as you leave Mass. Please consider taking one or two to help a child in need this Christmas. If you are unable to attend Mass and watch virtually, we have inserted an Angel tag in the bulletin that you can print, cut out and attach to your stocking. We will also leave some Angels in a basket in the gathering space of the church if you attend morning Mass during the week.
Here is what we are asking:
Please purchase a 16”-18” Christmas stocking and a Target, Walmart, Visa, etc. gift card (minimum $25). Please be sure to write the amount of your gift card somewhere on the card. You may choose the age and gender (newborn - teenagers) of your Angel just be sure to write that information on the back of the Angel. Put the gift card in the stocking and fill the rest of the stocking with little fun items you think your Angel would enjoy receiving. For many children this might be the only gift they will receive this year. After you have purchased the items and filled your stocking attach your Angel tag to the stocking and follow the directions on the back of the Angel tag. It is important that you give your stocking to one of the volunteers either on Wednesdays or on the weekend before all the Masses.
If you are unable to shop or would like us to shop for you, please put your donation (checks payable to Holy Spirit) in an envelope and label it “Angel Tree”. You can also go online to our website www.holyspiritlv.org, go to “Give On Line” and select “Angel Tree. Donations in the Poor Box will also assist with this project.
Thank you for rising to this new challenge and making this Christmas special for many deserving children. God bless you!
