DIRECTOR'S NOTE: Sunday Masses Return to Sage Chapel
Our Cornell Catholic Community returns to Sage Chapel on September 19th to celebrate the Sunday Masses together, in person! The pandemic changed the way many of us attended the liturgy over the past 18 months. Mass was livestreamed from parish churches, cloistered chapels, large cathedrals, even from St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome which most of us viewed from the comfort and safety and informality of our apartments and homes. Now, it’s time to gather again as a campus community to publicly celebrate the Lord’s Day. I’m especially excited to be returning to Sage Chapel. Since I am not the pastor of a parish, I had no church of my own in which to regularly celebrate the Mass over the past year and a half. I am grateful to Father Augustine Chumo, the pastor of Immaculate Conception Church in downtown Ithaca, who graciously allowed us the use of the Church for a Sunday Mass during the spring semester
We will have two Sunday Masses in Sage Chapel. The first will be at 10:30 a.m. The evening Mass will start at 9:00 p.m. rather than 9:30 p.m.
You will notice some wonderful changes in the chapel. The wooden floors and the pews have been completely refurbished and respaced. The floor mosaics have been individually cleaned, reset, and resealed. All the ceiling lights and fixtures have been repaired and replaced with LED lights. We will miss the sound of the great Aeolian-Skinner organ this semester. After eighty years – it was built and installed in 1940 – the organ has been temporarily removed for cleaning and restoration. We have been assured that it will be reinstalled by Easter.
The long pandemic will still have an impact on our worship. We will all need to wear protective coverings on our mouths and noses and social distancing will still be strongly encouraged. Because the chapel is not properly fitted with up-to-date air filtration, we will not be able to sing as a congregation during the liturgy. Generous cantors and other musicians will join me in singing some parts of the Mass in anticipation of the day when we can all sing together in the chapel.
I hope you will join us this Sunday. You might also extend an invitation to classmates and friends who may not get this message or who have never been in Sage Chapel. It will be so good to be with you again as we celebrate the Sunday Masses in Sage.
