Envy and Jealousy are the subjects of many TV dramas, soap operas, movie plots and are probably part of our personal landscape as well.
The first reading from the book of Wisdom shows us the envy and jealousy of the wicked people against a good man. The second reading from the Letter of James is about the Christian community that is being ripped apart by envy and jealousy. The Gospel reading is about the jealousy among the Apostles as to who is really the greatest among them, who is closest to Christ.
Envy and jealousy can be storms in our souls. When we begin to examine the many blessings in our lives and to focus on our following of Christ in everything, then we discover a peace that comes when the storm subsides. It is the peace of Christ.

Welcoming Our Parish Permanent Deacon: Deacon George Khoury
Deacon George studied philosophy & Theology initially at Seminary in Jerusalem. He came to the United States in 1970, obtained B.A. & M.A. degrees in French & Spanish Literature. He earned a Ph.D. in theology from Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley in 1990. Over the years, he has taught in high schools and colleges and has also been deeply involved all along in church activities especially with the Palestinian community in San Francisco.
Deacon George Khoury was ordained Deacon by Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone in 2017. He is married to Nariman, a chemist at UCSF, and they are blessed with three girls, two grandchildren.
We are delighted to have Deacon George on our pastoral team!
Book of Prayer Intentions
The Christian life is one of prayer. As a community, we are always praying for one another. We are therefore introducing a book of prayer intentions for our community. Each person can record their prayer petitions and requests for the sick, the homebound, the suffering, personal needs, the local and universal church, the needs of the world, and all who need prayer.
You are welcomed to record your prayer requests and we will continue to remember them at Mass and the Holy Hour (Eucharist Adoration).

Council, Controversy, Conversion, and Communion, A Six-Week Course on the Second Vatican Council

The Second Vatican Council remains controversial in some Catholic circles. Many people see it as involving a radical break from the Catholic past, for good or bad. Others, such as the popes since the Council, see it as a renewal and reform of the one-and-the-same Catholic Church.
The Online Pastoral School of the Archdiocese of San Francisco is pleased to invite Mark Brumley, a former staff apologist at Catholic Answers, to offer an online course on this subject. This is a mini-course covering the main teachings of the Second Vatican Council (1962-1965). It also examines how the Council’s teaching has been received, misperceived, and resisted, as well as how it has shaped Catholic life and mission in the last half-century. A Shift in School Governance Model: St. Finn Barr Catholic School.
Before I took over the reins of this community, our former Pastor Father William McCain had advanced in talks with the Department of Catholic Schools in the Archdiocese about shifting the supervisory Model of our School from the Parish model to the Cooperative Governance model. In the Cooperative Governance model, most school operations and programs are supervised by the Department of Catholic Schools, while the Pastor of the Parish retains responsibility for the Catholic identity, finances, and facilities of the School on behalf of the Parish. In addition, the Pastor and the Department of Catholic Schools co-supervise the day-to-day finances of the School. Last August, I followed through with the talks Father McCain had advanced and signed an MOU with the Department of Catholic Schools.
Implications:
·St. Finn Barr Catholic School remains a School of the Saint Finn Barr Parish.
·St. Finn Barr Parish and her Pastor/Administrator will retain responsibility for the Catholic Identity, Finances, and facilities of the School.
·The Department of Catholic Schools, through its representative, will now supervise the Academic program, vitality of the School, and Administration.

Background on the Gospel Reading
In today’s Gospel, we hear Jesus again predict his passion, death, and Resurrection to his disciples. The setting here is important. Jesus and his disciples are preparing to journey through Galilee, a territory in which Jesus has already encountered problems with the Pharisees.
Perhaps this is why Mark indicates that Jesus was trying to journey in secret. In predicting his passion, Jesus is acknowledging the danger they will face and is trying to preparing his disciples for it. Yet Mark tells us that the disciples did not understand what Jesus was saying and were afraid to ask what he meant. Such hesitation on the part of the disciples is not characteristic behavior.
Peter had no fear about rebuking Jesus in last week’s Gospel. Perhaps this is an indication that the disciples were aware that a new situation was emerging.
Mark paints a vivid picture in today’s Gospel. Having arrived at Capernaum, Jesus and his disciples enter a house. In this private place, Jesus asks his disciples about the argument they had while they were journeying. Again, the disciples are uncharacteristically silent and afraid to answer. They have been found out.
Jesus then summons the Twelve, whom Mark identified earlier in his Gospel as those chosen by Jesus to preach and to drive out demons. To this select group of disciples, Jesus teaches that those who would be first in God’s kingdom must be servants of all. Jesus then calls forward a child and teaches the Twelve that to receive a child in Jesus’ name is to receive both Jesus and the One who sent him. We might easily fail to understand the significance of this action.
In first-century Palestine, children were without status or power, possessing no legal rights. In this action, Jesus is teaching his disciples and us that when we serve the least ones among us, we serve Jesus himself. Who are the people without power or status in our society that Jesus is calling us to serve? Do we do so willingly? Jesus teaches that God’s judgment of us will be based on this criterion alone.

Antecedentes de la lectura del Evangelio
En el evangelio de hoy, escuchamos a Jesús predecir nuevamente su pasión, muerte y resurrección a sus discípulos. El entorno aquí es importante. Jesús y sus discípulos se preparan para viajar por Galilea, un territorio en el que Jesús ya ha tenido problemas con los fariseos.
Quizás es por eso que Marcos indica que Jesús estaba tratando de viajar en secreto.
