Hello 1st Grade Families,
We have had busy week in first grade. Here are some of the things we did this week.
Phonics: We worked on the short i and a sounds, we learned about rhyming words with the endings and, amp, ax
Reading: We read from our Journey's book "The Storm." We had a few short stories in that chapter. We have time each day for free reading where students get to sit around the room in their reading spot and read.
Writing: We write in our journals every day. We wrote about what we do after school, the weather, and ways we keep cool. We have been making sure we start each sentence with a capital letter and end with a period. We also learned about nouns. A noun is a person, place, or thing. Students had fun writing a noun in each column on the white board.
Math: We worked on adding with story problems. We used the 120 mats again to practice the larger numbers. We practiced counting by 5's and 10's. The kids enjoy math games during math time with a deck of cards.
Science: We went on a leaf hunt in the school yard. We observed our leaves and wrote about them in our science journals. We each got to keep 1 leaf to put in our journal.
Here are a few of the things we will be working on next week.
Phonics: We will be learning about the short a sound and more rhyming words
Reading: We will be reading Curious George Goes to School. We will talk about sequence of events in a story.
Writing: We will be learning about verbs and continue writing in our journals.
Math: We will play the game Top It. We will work with tens frames, part/part/whole, 120 mats, bunny hop and dice tally games.
Science: We will learn about how seeds travel and read about it from our science book.
We enjoy having your child in our 1st grade class! Thank you for all your support. Have a wonderful weekend!
