Thirty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time (A)
Here are the words I wrote for our Dinner Dance Journal on Saturday night:
We come here tonight to celebrate the one hundred and sixty-ninth anniversary of the beginning of St. Mary’s Church in 1848. I can’t help reflecting on all the activities that have taken place in this building over the years. While doing research for my history of the parish, I read descriptions of the many activities that took place here, and more dramatically, viewed the photographs of the men, women and children who used this building, first as a church and then as a parish hall. My estimate of the numbers who used this building reached into the hundreds of thousands. Our parish hall contains many memories, including my own as the pastor of thirty years.
It is quite amazing that this building has survived all these years. That it has survived is a tribute to our parishioners today. Even more so, is the miracle of our church building. It has not only survived but is more beautiful than ever. Tonight we honor there parishioners who represent the spirit of our great parish: Catherine Reid, Maria Neto and Julio Salazar. Their biographies in this journal are short because of the limitation of space but their contributions to our parish have been great.
