In Good Times and In Bad
While they were all amazed at his every deed, Jesus said to his disciples, “Pay attention to what I am telling you. The Son of Man is to be handed over to men.” (Lk 9:43-44)
In today’s gospel, Jesus predicts his coming Passion. His followers are amazed at his words and deeds. Jesus teaches with authority. People are astonished by the miracles he has performed. His following is growing. In the midst of their growing excitement, Jesus says to his disciples,“Pay attention to what I am telling you. The Son of Man is to be handed over to men.” (Lk 9:43-44) In their current excitement, they don’t understand what Jesus is telling them. They cannot fathom his future betrayal, suffering and the difficult times to come.
It’s easy to follow Jesus when things are going well, and life is good. But what about when times get difficult, and we feel lost and desperate? Are we still willing to take up our own cross daily and follow Him?
Let us pray. Lord, when things are going badly and I am discouraged, remind me of your Passion so that I can find my strength through you. Amen.
