SOME WONDERFUL PARISH NEWS
Next weekend, our parishes are blessed to have one of our members ordained to the Permanent Diaconate. Steve Powers, whom many of you know through his many years of service to the parish as an usher, leader, and member of Saint Vincent de Paul Society and many other activities, will become a Permanent Deacon on October 2, 2021, at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross in Boston.
We thank God for Steve and his example to our community, and congratulate him, his wife Laura, and his family on his call. A vocation is a call from God, and we thank Steve for answering the call to serve in the church. The word deacon in the original language means “servant”, and the first deacons in the early church were selected in order to assist the church with the care of the poor, widows, and those in need. Today, we understand the role of the deacon also in terms of parish ministry. In fact, when Cardinal Sean O’Malley ordains Steve next Saturday, Steve will be ordained to assist at Mass at the Altar, and in proclaiming the Holy Word of God in the Gospel. The liturgical role of the deacon also includes delivering a homily, baptizing children (and adults), blessing objects and people, and being an ordinary minister of Holy Communion. The church is very blessed to have Steve ordained to be a deacon.
As has been announced, next Sunday October 3, at the 9:30am Mass, Steve will serve Mass and deliver the homily at Saint Rose Church for us. After Mass we will have a gathering with light refreshments. All are welcome and encouraged to come and greet Steve and his wife Laura and congratulate them on his call to service as Deacon in the church.
God Bless, Fr. Dan
