What a GREAT week!
Next week is Homecoming week! We have dress-up days planned for the week.
Monday: Dress like a farmer
Tuesday: Dress in camouflage
Wednesday: Remains a pride day. We have mass with the Bishop
Thursday: Wear red, white and blue
Friday: Anything demon, black or orange
Reminders:
We have an early out on Oct. 8 for Homecoming so students can attend the parade and another early out on Oct. 15 for PD for teachers.
Try to remind your child to keep toys and trinkets at home. It has become a little distracting. Some are sneaking them out at times that they should not be. We will start Show and Tell soon! A backpack will come home each day with one student. If your child brings the Show and Tell backpack they can bring one item from home in it to share with the class. So exciting!
Thank you for being so cautious about staying healthy. We have had a few students out this week due to various illnesses. We appreciate you keeping your child home if they are ill, we know it’s challenging, but so important. You are amazing families!
Reading: This week we continued to work on CVC words with short /a/ and added short /e/. You should have found a half sheet with 3 sight words to work on at home. We will retest weekly on Tuesday or Wednesday and send home the next 3 words to practice. This coming week we will continue to work on short a,e and add short u words to our easy readers. In writing we are focusing on writing a complete sentence using a capital letter, spaces and punctuation.
Math: We continue to practice our addition skills using various strategies. We also are working on numbers 50-120: recognizing, counting on from any number, telling numbers before and after, stating ten more and ten less.
Science: In first grade this week the kids took plant cuttings and put them in water to see if we can grow a shoot/root to replant. We discovered that our wheat seed has begun to grow in the straw, so interesting! Bennett’s Grandma talked to us about butterflies. We had the opportunity to release a newly hatched butterfly on the playground. So much fun to watch it go out on it’s maiden voyage.
Socially: The students have been working very hard this week on being kind to each other with our words and actions. We talked about how saying the same thing in a mean tone of voice or a kind tone means two different things.
Ex: “Please stop doing that” (gently and calmly) or
“Please stop doing that!!!” (yelling in someone's face)
These two statements can hurt someone's feelings and cause an argument, or it can help the other person know you don’t care for what they are doing.
Monday and Tuesday= Mrs. M is teaching
Wednesday, Thursday and Friday= Mrs. Luers is teaching
Tuesday the Washington Fire Fighters will be here in the afternoon to do fire prevention stations with us.
Friday in the morning, the High School band is coming for a Pep assembly on the playground. We are looking forward to a FUN week at school!
We are thankful for each and every one of you,
Mrs. Luers & Mrs. M
