Plunged into the Paschal Mystery of Christ
The council fathers of Vatican II were intent that "pastors of souls should see to the liturgical instruction of the faithful." In an effort to fulfill this sacred responsibility, the homilies and bulletin letters during October will be centered on liturgical instruction and theology.
One of the most important documents regarding the sacred liturgy in our time is Sacrosanctum Concilium [SC], a constitution of Vatican II. I highly encourage you to read it (see the link below)! It will certainly transform your understanding of what happens at Mass, and perhaps dispel a few common myths about what Vatican II says or doesn't say. Here is an excerpt from paragraph 6:
"Just as Christ was sent by the Father, so also He sent the apostles, filled with the
Holy Spirit...His purpose also was that they might accomplish the work of salvation which they had proclaimed, by means of sacrifice and sacraments, around which the entire liturgical life revolves. Thus by baptism men are plunged into the paschal mystery of Christ: they die with Him, are buried with Him, and rise with Him; they receive the spirit of adoption as sons "in which we cry: Abba, Father" (Rom. 8 :15), and thus become true adorers whom the Father seeks. In like manner, as often as they eat the supper of the Lord they proclaim the death of the Lord until He comes...From [Pentecost] onwards the Church has never failed to come together to celebrate the paschal mystery: reading those things "which were in all the scriptures concerning him" (Luke 24:27), celebrating the eucharist in which "the victory and triumph of his death are again made present", and at the same time giving thanks "to God for his unspeakable gift" (2 Cor. 9:15) in Christ Jesus, "in praise of his glory" (Eph. 1:12), through the power of the Holy Spirit."
That they might accomplish the work of salvation which they had proclaimed. Did you know that every celebration of the Mass is the accomplishment of the work of our salvation? As Catholics we have the great blessing not only of proclaiming Christ's death and resurrection but also witnessing his perfect sacrifice to the Father presented anew in every Mass!
By baptism men are plunged into the paschal mystery of Christ. By our baptism we die with Christ, are buried with Christ, and rise with Christ. We are adopted in Christ, and are truly sons and daughters of God!
We can see already in the introduction to SC that the Mass and the Sacraments are much more than simple external religious ceremonies. They are profound mysteries that transform us at the core of our being! In the coming weeks I invite you all to plunge with me into these mysteries, to deepen your understanding of the sacred liturgy. May the Holy Spirit guide us in this study, so that we may "become true adorers whom the Father seeks."
