Come, Follow Me
Perhaps we know the story of the rich, young man well, but listen to it with new ears this weekend.
The young man, living well by the commandments, encounters Christ and is challenged to "Go, sell what you have, and give to the poor... then come, follow me."
"Indeed," St. Paul tells us, "the word of God is living and effective, sharper than any two-edged sword" (Heb. 4:12-13). The words of Jesus cut to the heart of this young man, who wants to follow a series of rules and check the boxes instead of participating in a life-giving relationship with Christ.
We don't know if the young man stayed away from Christ for good or if he eventually returned. Jesus allows him to walk away, respecting his freedom. That same open door is available to us. How will we respond?
