Prisons Week
Dear Parishioners,
I shall be away for two weeks from Tuesday visiting my elder son and his family in Canada. The visit has been timed so that I can be present at my grandson’s First Holy Communion.
I have arranged for Fr Richard, a Kiltegan Father, to celebrate Mass on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday during my absence. Fr Roy, from Guildford parish, will celebrate morning Mass on Saturday October 16th, but Saturday morning Mass will be cancelled on October 23rd. Mgr Richard Madders will celebrate the four weekend Masses. Deacon Nick will be here to help during the weekends and on Mondays. The parish office will continue to be staffed but, obviously, some decisions might have to be delayed until my return.
Do please check the Newsletter and Parish Website to ensure that any changes are noted by you. I hope there will be none!

A Week of Prayer 10th-16th October
The Prisons Week theme for 2021 is ‘Journeying from Despair to Hope.’ It is based around Luke 12:24: ‘Consider the ravens: they do not sow or reap, they have no storeroom or barn; yet God feeds them. And how much more valuable you are than birds!’ (NIV). We are invited to pray daily for the needs of all those affected by prisons. Daily themes and prayers can be downloaded from cte.org.uk/prisonsweek2021/.
The Prison Advice and Care Trust is a national charity that provides support to prisoners, people with convictions, and their families. They support people to make a fresh start and minimise the harm that can be caused by imprisonment to people who have committed offences, to families and to communities. To donate to PACT please visit their home page or leave a donation in a labelled basket after Mass.

READINGS FOR SUNDAY OCTOBER 10th
Twenty Eighth Sunday of Ordinary Time
Wisdom 7:7-11. Who is a man of wisdom? He is the one who values wisdom more than anything in the world. He values it (her) because he knows his own ignorance. He knows that wisdom is the only thing he really needs. It is what or who saves his life. Wisdom brings everything good and valuable in his life, for it leads his life in the right direction, towards God, the Saviour.
Psalm 89:12-17. Fill us with your love so that we may rejoice.
Hebrews 4:12-13. The Word of God, which is nothing but the Truth itself and Origin of any truth, is indeed strong and sharp. It is rather crude than gentle, for it reveals everything without exception. It reveals what is hidden even, or especially to myself. It reveals everything not because those are needed to be revealed, but because there is no need for anything to be hidden in front of God.
Mark 10:17-30. This young man in today’s Gospel, was living a perfectly good life in every aspect. However, he seeks more. He might have felt that there had to be something more to be sought in his life, He asked the Lord what he must do to inherit eternal life. Indeed, the Lord gave him an answer. He had to give up everything he had, and he could follow the Lord. Everything he had, everything that used to keep him safe, proud, strong and whole, becomes his stumbling block. He wanted to take one step further, but it was a whole new dimension. He came with confidence and ambition, but left with sadness and frustration.

CHRISTIAN BLIND MISSION
On Sunday October 17th, in the week of World Sight Day, Thursday 14th October, we remember the 253 million people worldwide who are visually impaired, of whom 89% live in low- and middle-income countries, often facing stigma and discrimination as people exclude them from school, work and participating in their community. Over 75% of visual impairment is avoidable and this week we are invited to support CBM UK programmes to restore the sight of those facing needless blindness. ST HUGH’S, KNAPHILL, PARISH MISSION
At St Hugh’s Knaphill a small Parish Mission is being led by a Redemptorist priest, Fr Royston Price, and two Dominican nuns, Sr Cooey and Sr Dominic. All welcome. It will be on the 13th,14th and 15th October with a quick 7am Mass for people to come to before work and an evening mission service at 7.30pm preceded by Mass, a Holy Hour and Confessions. CRIBS FROM BETHLEHEM
If anyone would like to buy a carved olive wood crib from Bethlehem for Christmas, please contact John Sylvester, 01483 714006 in the coming week. It is hoped to have the same cost as last year of £80. The cribs will be available in early December.

ST DUNSTAN'S CATHOLIC PRIMARY SCHOOL 2022/23 ADMISSIONS
Some parents have enquired as to the status of 2022/23 Admissions to St Dunstan’s Catholic Primary in as far as the Supplementary Information Form (SIF) and the Mass sign in sheets are concerned.
St Dunstan’s School will, as is normally the case, require a SIF to be prepared as part of the application process for school entry in September 2022. Normally there would be “Mass sign in sheets” available on Sundays during calendar year 2021 to help the Priests of the Parish sign the SIFs. Due to the pandemic the sign in sheets have not been available during calendar 2021 to date but will be reinstated once the Sunday Obligation position is changed. Until then the position of St Dunstan’s Parish remains that of Parishes throughout the Diocese of Arundel and Brighton which is summarised as follows:-
The suspension of the obligation to attend Sunday Mass was announced on 18th March 2020 by the Bishops' Conference of England and Wales. If a parent/carer attended Mass at a particular parish (or parishes) prior to 18th March 2020 then they will be considered to have attended Mass in that parish (or parishes) regularly since that time. This will remain the case until the Sunday obligation is reintroduced by the Bishops.

MASCOT FRIENDSHIP CAFÉ
The Mascot Friendship Café has restarted at St Paul's church Community Halls, Oriental Road, GU22 7BD. We offer good company, a quiz, seated exercise (group is led by a professional personal trainer), music, newspapers and refreshments - tea, coffee, cake. This is a safe place for people living with memory loss and their families. We wear masks when not seated. Parking is available on site.
