Thirty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time (A)
Thursday is Thanksgiving Day. We will celebrate a special Mass at 10 AM to thank God for the blessings that we have received in this past year. It will be bilingual (English –Spanish). There will be no 8:15 AM, Mass but there will be the usual 12:05 on that day. In a time of high anxiety in our nation, it is healthy for us to come to church and thank God for the good people that are part of our lives. “Eucharist” means “Thanks”.
Many thanks to all the people who made our Annual Dinner Dance and Journal so successful. They raised $8,800.00 for our parish. A special thanks for the cover page of the Journal. it has a great photo of me in my Sunday vestments and another photo in the background working in our garden with the tulips.
Congratulations to Michael Khader who was elected the Yonkers City Council President last Tuesday. Michael is a member of our Arabic Community of the Good Shepherd. I remember him as an alter boy. His father used to be the organist at the Arabic Masses, as he reminds me often, he and O were born on the same day and year.
Our stained glass windows project continues. They have begun to work on the Rose Window. Whether they can finish by Christmas will depend on the weather. They can’t work when the temperature drops below 40 degrees. One of our large windows in the nave of the church (behind the statue of St. Teresa ) depicts St. Charles Borromeo. His biography is very interesting. He died on November 3, 1884 at the age of forty-six. He was a cardinal and secretary of state at the age of twenty-two for his uncle, Pope Pius IV. He implemented the reform of seminaries and is considered a model pastor. He is the patron of catechists and of catechumens. Why is he placed in such a prominent place in our church? he was the favorite saint of the pastor who built our church, Fr. Corley, whose first name was Charles.
Happy Thanksgiving Day, November 23, 2017Although Thanksgiving is a national holiday, its celebration can certainly be enhanced because it echoes the basic orientation of our Christian faith. As St. Paul so eloquently reminded the bickering Corinthian community, “What do you have that you did not receive? And if you received it, why do you boast as if it were not a gift? (1Cor 4:7).
Every time we celebrate the Eucharist, we remind ourselves that all we have and all we are comes from God. So as we celebrate this Thanksgiving day, we not only thank God for the abundance of goods and freedoms we share as citizens, but also for the gift of God’s abiding presence in our lives through the risen Jesus and through the Holy Spirit to sanctify our world. The rectory office will be closed the 23rd and 24th in observance of the Thanksgiving holiday.
Collection : the collection for last Sunday, November 12, 2017 was $3,503.00
The second collection this Sunday is for the Catholic Charities Campaign for Charity and Justice.
Thirty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time: Jesus in today’s Gospel tells the parable of the three servants and how they dealt with the talents given to them. Perhaps it is just a coincidence that our word “talent”, which means a gift or skill, is used in this story to refer to a large amount of money. But the connection works for us; as we continue our prayer together today, this may be a good time to reflect on the talents that we have been given and how we have used them in the service of God’s reign.
1st Reading: Proverbs 31:10-13 : The value of a worthy woman is beyond measure.
Psalm 128: “Blessed are those who fear the Lord”.
2nd Reading: 1 Thessalonians 5:1-6: the day of the Lord will come like a thief at night.
Gospel: Matthew 25:14-30: The parable of the talents.
