Reminders:
We have an early out on Oct. 15 for PD for teachers.
Try to remind your child to keep toys and trinkets at home. It has become a little distracting. Some are sneaking them out at times that they should not be. We will start Show and Tell soon! A backpack will come home each day with one student. If your child brings the Show and Tell backpack they can bring one item from home in it to share with the class. So exciting!
Reading: This week we continued to work on CVC words with short /a/ and added short /e/. You should have found a half sheet with 3 sight words to work on at home. We will retest weekly on Tuesday or Wednesday and send home the next 3 words to practice. This coming week we will continue to work on short a,e and add short u words to our easy readers. In writing we are focusing on writing a complete sentence using a capital letter, spaces and punctuation.
Math: We continue to practice our addition skills using various strategies. We also are working on numbers 50-120: recognizing, counting on from any number, telling numbers before and after, stating ten more and ten less.
Socially: Students have been working on being Problem Solvers, not Problem Makers. We talked about how some things are kid problems and some things are adult problems. When having a problem with another student, think: Is is a big deal or little deal? If it a little deal, I can work it out myself by:
Ignoring the behavior
If the behavior continues, ask the student nicely to stop. Some language we use is= “Beverly, when you tap your desk with a pencil, it distracts me. Will you please stop?” The other student is supposed to respond by saying, “Oh, yes, I’m sorry”
If the behavior still continues...walk away from the situation, if possible,
If it continues, then get a teacher for help.
We have noticed that this class jumps straight to tattling on each other. This is all part of growing up emotionally. It is best to have children begin to learn how to solve their own problems at a young age. You can try this at home with siblings as well!
