On August 14, 2021, a 7.2 magnitude earthquake hit the western peninsula of Haiti and did extensive damage to our sister parish, St.Louis De Gonzague, in Bonbon. Both the parish school, St. Veronica, and the parish rectory have been determined uninhabitable. Both of these buildings are two levels (the tallest in Bonbon) and are very old. Until repairs are made, neither building can be used. School is being held temporarily in single-level building next to the rectory and Fr. Bernadin is unable to live in the rectory.
We have received quotes to repair the school and rectory. The school repairs are $18,846 and the rectory repairs are $26,661. Our Twinning Committee has sent the money for the school repairs which are underway (see attached pictures). The rectory repairs will start once the school is completed.
After an update given at all our Masses on the weekend of September 11&12, our parish once again showed their generosity through a special collection and from expressions of sympathy donations for Agnes Clifford. These donations will make it possible to provide the additional funds for the repairs of the parish rectory.
The repairs to these very old buildings will be made according to current building standards and with more modern materials. This should enable these buildings to be used for many more years. As a note, after repairs made to the church after Hurricane Matthew in 2016, there was no damage to it during the earthquake.
Fr. Bernadin has sent many messages of appreciation and thanks to the parishioners of St.Bernadette for their generosity and support. The parishioners of St.Louis De Gonzague are praying for us.
