I WANT TO SEE

How should we "see" the world? Is the culture our enemy? Should we retreat from the world at all costs, or should we just blend in, "be nice," and not make waves?

"Son of David, have pity on me!" the blind Bartimeus calls out in our Gospel this weekend. Jesus summons Bartimeus, inviting him to rebirth and transformation. "Throwing off his cloak" is the symbol of throwing off his old life and his old desires. Jesus never compels but asks, "What do you want me to do for you?" The man wants to see. Jesus heals him, physically, but also at the level of his soul, and sends him forth into the world.

Jesus fulfills the Old Testament promise of Jeremiah that the exiles and remnant will be gathered back together; the lame will walk and the blind will see! Any first-century Jew would not have missed what Jesus was doing. But beyond being a political messiah, Jesus is after healing the world down to the root of sin, if only we give ourselves over to his saving power.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

Liturgy of the Word for Children is a program in which the Sunday scripture readings are proclaimed and explained on a level appropriate to children in grades

pre-K – 2nd at the 10:00 a.m. Sunday Mass. Adult volunteers are needed to lead scripture readings, reflection, and prayer.

Teen volunteers are needed to help the adults and facilitate discussions. All training will be provided and volunteers will work on a rotating basis. Please contact Miriam Tipley at miriam.tipley@sttheresa.cc or 346-335-1808, if you'd like more information on helping with this important ministry.

INSPIRING READERS AT ST. THERESA

Fr. Phil inaugurated St. Theresa's Free Little Library on October 14th and now it's open to the public. This is the senior project of Eva Farfan of Frassati Catholic High School as a way to encourage reading and combat illiteracy. The library is free and open to everyone with the premise, take a book, leave a book.

BECOMING A MAN AFTER GOD'S OWN HEART

That Man Is You! is an interactive men’s program that combines the latest findings of modern science with the teachings of the Church and the wisdom of the saints to develop authentic male leaders capable of transforming themselves, their families, and greater society. Join us for fellowship and faith. We will be gathering at about 5:45 a.m. (the program will begin promptly at 6:00 a.m) in the Fellowship Hall on Wednesday mornings. All men are welcome. Volunteers will help prepare and package a hot meal and then distribute about 300 to-go boxes to the homeless. Volunteers are still limited to 8 per shift and must be 15 years or older.

HEALING MOVEMENT

Life is chaotic, especially with the past year of a pandemic. Now more than ever we need to find healthy means to relieve the body of tension so our minds and souls can sit more with God.

Join Bonnie Senteno as she teaches strength and flexibility through therapeutic body movements that release tension from the body. This class is geared to prevent injuries for athletes and those wanting to improve the quality of movement from old injuries. No prior experience is required. Please bring a yoga or athletic mat. Each class is one hour in duration.

Congratulations to Father Italo Dell"Oro, C.R.S., on his appointment as Houston Auxiliary Bishop. Please keep him in your prayers as he is starting this new call of service.

Bishop-elect Dell’Oro has served as a priest for almost 40 years, 30 of those in the local Archdiocese. Since 2015, he has served as Vicar for Clergy and the Secretariat Director for Clergy Formation and Chaplaincy Services. He was named Vicar General in 2021.

Join RENEW International and the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Washington, for a conversation with Cardinal Wilton Gregory, archbishop of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Washington, and Sister Helen Prejean, as they discuss the death penalty in the United States and what current Church teaching has to say about this subject.

Cardinal Gregory has written extensively on a consistent ethic of life and life issues, including pastoral statements on the death penalty, racial justice, and euthanasia/physician-assisted suicide.

Sister Helen Prejean is an outspoken advocate for abolishing the death penalty in the United States and is best known for her book, Dead Man Walking, which was turned into a feature film.
